Lighting system — general information (BMW 3 Series E36)

The lighting system includes: Main headlights (low beam and parking light), high beam headlights, tail lights, brake lights, reversing lights, direction indicators, fog lights and rear fog lights, license plate lights and interior lights (as well as lighting of the engine and luggage compartments). Instrument lighting is described in the section "Devices".

Conventional incandescent lamps (non halogen lamps) are subject to wear and tear. They should be replaced every 2 years, even if they are still working. An incandescent lamp with reduced brightness is identified by black deposits on the bulb.

Before replacing a lamp, switch off the corresponding consumer.

Warning: Do not touch the bulb with your fingers. Fingerprints will make it cloudy and - due to heating - a sediment will form on the reflector, which will darken the reflector. Always replace the bulb with a bulb of the same type. Wipe stains on the bulb with a clean, lint-free cloth and alcohol.
