Automatic diagnostic system (BMW X5 E53)

The automatic diagnostic system (ADS) of the BMW X5 E53 operates only when the ignition is on (position "2") and constantly monitors the condition and operation of the main units of the car during the trip. The car's condition is displayed both in graphic form (Fig. 1.15) and alphanumeric (Fig. 1.16).

When the ignition key is set to position "2", the display (Fig. 1.15) shows the status of the following parameters, which do not go out until the causes that caused their appearance are eliminated:
  • 1 - low beam lamps are on;
  • 2 - low fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir;
  • 3 - open state of doors;
  • 4 - the upper trunk door is open;
  • 5 - the reversing lights and brake lights are on.

From ignition key position "2", all instructions and warnings are displayed in text form (2, Fig. 1.16), a warning signal may sound.

All faults included in the program are divided into two priority groups: the first group (priority 1) and the second group (priority 2).

Priority 1 includes faults that warn of danger, their appearance is accompanied by an audible signal and flashing signal symbols (1, Fig. 1.16). If several faults occur simultaneously, they are displayed one after the other. The messages remain until the causes that caused them to appear are eliminated. They cannot be erased by pressing the "CHECK" button (3) GARDEN.

Attention! If priority 1 faults occur, stop driving, turn off the engine and find out the cause of their occurrence. Driving with these faults is prohibited.


Priority 1:
  • "Fasten Seat Belts", fasten your seat belts;
  • "ReleaseParkingbrake", release the parking brake;
  • "CoolantTemperature", coolant temperature is above normal;
  • "Stop! EngineOilpress", Stop! Engine oil pressure is below normal;
  • "CheckBrakeFluid", brake fluid level is below normal;
  • "DSC/4× 4 Inactive", there is no stabilizing effect of the DSC or xDrive systems;
  • "Tyre Defect", tire damage;
  • "SelflevelSusp. Inact", the ride height regulator is faulty;
  • "SelflevelSusp. Inact", ground clearance adjustment is not active and "Max 60 km/h", do not exceed 60 km/h. These messages appear one after another;
  • "TrailerMode", this message appears for 3 seconds when the ground clearance level changes from normal to driving under load;
  • "FuelInject. System", malfunction in the engine injection system;
  • "Transmissin Overheat", gearbox overheating;
  • "Speedlimit", speeding.

Priority 2 includes faults, the indication of which appears when the ignition key is in position "2" for approximately 20 seconds. After the inscription goes out, the signal symbols (1) remain. To call them up again, press the "CHECK" button (3) CAD. Priority 2:


  • "BootlidOpen", the trunk lid is open;
  • "DoorOpen", the salon door is open;
  • "Pre-Heating", pre-start warm-up (diesel engine);

The following messages appear only once:
  • "WasherFluidLow", add fluid to the windshield washer reservoir;
  • "Outside Temperature — 5.0°C", outside air temperature minus 5°C
  • "CheckEngineOilLev", check the engine oil level;
  • "SetTyrePressure", set the tire pressure so that the RDC system accepts the tire pressure as the set value;
  • "CheckTyrePressure", check tire pressure;
  • "TyreControlInactive", RDC system malfunction;
  • "CheckBrakeLights", the lamp has burned out or there is a break in the power supply circuit;
  • "CheckLowbeamLights", check the low beam headlights;
  • "CheckParkLights", check the parking lights:
  • "CheckTailLights", check the rear lights;
  • "CheckFrontFoglamps", check the fog lights;
  • "CheckFrontFoglights", check the fog lights;
  • "CheckNumplateLight", check the license plate light;
  • "Check Trailer Lights", check the trailer lights;
  • "CheckHighbeamLights", check the high beam headlights;
  • "CheckReverseLights", check the rear lights;
  • "Trans. FailsafeProg", automatic transmission emergency program;
  • "CheckBrakeLinings", check the brake pads;
  • "CheckCoolantLevel". Check the coolant level;
  • "EngineFailsafeProg", emergency engine control program.

Messages after ignition is turned off:
  • "Lights On", the light is on;
  • "CheckEngineOilLev". Check the engine oil level.

If a series of priority 2 faults occur simultaneously, the fault symbols appear in sequence. The signalling continues to flash until the fault is corrected.



Attention! If faults of priorities 1 and 2 occur simultaneously, the fault symbols of priority 2 will not appear until the causes of the occurrence of the fault symbols of priority 1 are completely eliminated.


The list of faults and their display language depends on the software installed in the vehicle model.
