Removal and installation the traction relay (BMW 3 Series E30)

If the traction relay is defective, the starter pinion does not engage with the flywheel ring gear. Because of this, the starter is unable to turn the engine.

Removal

Remove the starter.

Apply 12 V to terminal 50 of the starter.

Short-circuit terminals 50 and 30 of the starter with a jumper, the starter gear should rush forward. If this does not happen, unscrew the traction relay fastening on the starter and replace the traction relay.

Installation

Secure the traction relay to the starter, fill the groove "F" with the appropriate sealing compound.

Screw the wires to the traction relay.

Check the operation of the starter.

Install the starter.
