Removal and installation the starter (BMW 3 Series E30)

Removal

Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Four-cylinder engine with carburetor

Raise the car.

Unscrew the bracket on the starter.



Disconnect the wires from the traction relay.

Unscrew the nuts and remove the starter.

Four-cylinder engine with L-Jetronic injection system

Drain the coolant (see section "Replacing the coolant").

Raise the car.

Disconnect the heater hoses at the bottom near the starter.

Loosen the nuts.

Remove the air filter with the flow meter.

Remove the corrugated cover and support with the air collector.

Disconnect the wires from terminals 30 and 50 on the starter.

Remove the support shield.

Unscrew the fastening from below and remove the starter.

Six-cylinder engine M20 B20/B23

Remove the air filter housing with the air flow meter.

Raise the car.

Disconnect the wires from terminals 30 and 50.

Remove the support shield and lower mount.

Drain the coolant (see section "Replacing the coolant").

Disconnect the heating hoses.

Loosen the nuts.

Pull the starter upward.

Installation

The starter is installed in the reverse order.

Secure the heating hoses with new clamps.

If it has been drained, fill with coolant and bleed air from the cooling system (see section "Replacing the coolant").



Install the air filter housing with air flow meter (see section "Removal and installation the air filter").
