Removal and installation the starter (BMW 5 Series E34)

The starter is located on the side of the junction of the engine and gearbox and is removed upward.

Removal

Caution: To avoid short circuit, disconnect the battery.

On 518i, 520i, 525i models: Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.



On 530i, 535i, 524td, 525tds models: Disconnect the battery terminal at the bulkhead connector.

Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the section "Removing and installing the battery".

Disconnect the wires from the starter from terminal 30 (a thick wire that goes directly to the positive terminal of the battery) and terminals 50 (thin wire, from the ignition switch).





Unscrew the two nuts 3 of the starter. A Torx key E14 is required to hold the bolts. If the nuts are difficult to reach, remove the expansion tank and move aside the water hoses in the area of the starter. In addition, there is a special curved key from HAZET for removing the starter.

Unscrew bolt 7 from the rear support of the starter and first move the starter forward, and then pull it out.

Installation

The starter is installed in the reverse order. Do not forget to install the gasket washers of the mounting bolts.

Secure the water hoses with new clamps.

If the coolant has been drained, refill it into the engine.

Connect the ground wire to the battery or to the connector.
