Removal and installation the starter (BMW X5 E53)

The BMW X5 E53 starter replacement must be carried out from below, in the following order. Turn off the ignition and disconnect the "-" terminal from the battery. Remove the rear protective plate of the engine auxiliary mechanisms and the stiffening plate.

If there is an "ARS" system, unscrew the nut (1, Fig. 3.160) and remove the pressure pipes (2). Unscrew the bolts (3) and remove the holder (4).

Unscrew the nut and remove the "+" wire connecting the battery to the starter. Unscrew the bolts securing the starter to the engine, pull the starter out of the gearbox support and turn it so as to facilitate access to the control wires on the starter.

Loosen the nuts and disconnect the traction relay control circuit wires from the starter. Remove the starter. Check the drive gear and the starter ring gear for damage; replace the starter if necessary.

When installing, tighten the wire fastening nuts to the torque: M5 - 5.0 N·m (0.5 kgf·m); M6 - 7.0 N·m (0.7 kgf·m); M8 — 13.0 N·m (1.3 kgf·m). Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 47 N·m (4.7 kgf·m).
