Removal and installation the generator (BMW 5 Series E34)
Note: Additional instructions for 520i/525i models produced since May 1990 are provided at the end of this section.
Removal
On 518i, 520i, 525i models: Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.

On models 530i, 535i, 524td, 525tds. Disconnect the battery terminal at the connector on the bulkhead.
Caution: When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices, such as the engine fault memory or the radio security code memory, is erased. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in the section "Removing and installing the battery".
Loosen the tension and remove the V-belt.

Loosen hose clamp 2 and disconnect the air hose from the generator. The hose runs from the generator to the left headlight housing.
On 520i, 525i models: Remove the filter housing and air flow meter.
Remove the protective cover from the terminal block on the generator.

Bosch generator: Remove the wires from the B+ (terminal 30) and D+ (terminal 61) contacts. Unscrew the ground wire (terminal 31).

Loosen the generator mounting bolt and remove the generator.
Installation
Check the generator suspension bushings and replace them if necessary.
Insert the generator and secure with bolts.
Insert the tension roller and secure it with a bolt.
Connect the electrical wires to the generator: B+ (terminal 30), D+ (terminal 61) and ground jumper (terminal 31).
Apply and tighten the V-belt.
Connect the ground wire to the battery or connector.
Engine M50. Models 520i/525i produced since May 1990. (Four-valve engine with V-ribbed belt)
Removal

Loosen the bolts and remove the generator with the idler pulley.
Installation

When installing the idler roller, ensure that the retaining protrusion is inserted into the recess on the bearing.
Tighten the bolts and apply the ribbed V-belt.
