Exhaust system. General information (BMW 3 Series E30)

The exhaust system consists of a front pipe, a pre-silencer with a pipe and an end silencer. On vehicles with a catalytic converter, an exhaust filter is installed instead of a pre-silencer. A lambda probe is installed in the front pipe, which is used to control the operation of the catalytic converter.

The dual front pipe is bolted to the exhaust manifold, which is secured to the cylinder head. All parts are bolted or welded together and can be replaced separately. The self-locking nuts and gaskets must be replaced after removal. The retaining rings and rubber cushions are checked for cracks, otherwise they must be replaced.

When installing a new exhaust system, it is recommended to also install new fasteners.
