Exhaust system — general information (BMW 5 Series E39)

The exhaust system consists of two front exhaust pipes, which in the 520i, 523i and 525tds models are combined before the catalytic converter. This is followed by the middle and subsequent mufflers. In the 528i model, the exhaust system in the area of the catalytic converter and the tailpipe consists of two branches. In the gasoline engine, one oxygen sensor is screwed into each front exhaust pipe to regulate the catalytic converter.

The front exhaust pipe is bolted to the manifold outlet pipe (gasoline engine) or with a turbocharger (turbocharged diesel engine). All parts of the exhaust system can be replaced separately during repair.
