Exhaust system — general information and design (BMW 5 Series E34)

The exhaust system consists of a front pipe, a preliminary silencer with a pipe and an end silencer. On cars with a catalytic converter, an exhaust filter is installed instead of a preliminary silencer. A lambda probe is installed in the front pipe, which is used to control the operation of the catalytic converter.

The dual front pipe is bolted to the exhaust manifold, which is secured to the cylinder head. All parts are bolted or welded together and can be replaced separately. The self-locking nuts and gaskets must be replaced after removal.

Check the retaining rings and rubber cushions for cracks, otherwise they should be replaced.

When installing a new exhaust system, it is recommended to also install new fasteners.
