Removal and installation the battery (BMW 3 Series E46)
The battery is located in the luggage compartment behind the cover on the right side. In 316i, 318i cars, the battery is located in the engine compartment.
- The fault memory data in the engine control unit and other electronic control units is erased.
1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Remove the luggage compartment floor covering. Turn the clamps 90° with a screwdriver and remove the shell.
3. The positive cable connector on the battery is covered by a bar. Fold it back.
4. Disconnect first the negative (-) "1" and then the positive (+) "2" battery cables.
5 Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Unscrew the mounting bolts "3" and remove the clamp.
6. Models 316i, 318i: Unscrew the mounting bolts "3" and remove the clamp. Remove the positive connector casing "4" and the battery casing. 1 - negative cable.
7. Fold back the handle and remove the battery.
8. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Install the battery so that the poles point towards the wing.
9. Models 316i, 318i: Install the battery so that the poles point in the direction of travel.
10. Models 316i, 318i: Install the battery cover.
11. Install and secure the clamp.
12. Attach the positive (+) and then negative (-) cables to the terminals.
13. Insert the positive terminal cover.
14. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Insert the plastic shell into the side cover. Insert the clips and secure them by turning them 90°. Insert the luggage compartment floor covering.
15. Set the clock.
16. Initialize the sunroof sliding panel, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.
- The fault memory data in the engine control unit and other electronic control units is erased.
- The clock settings and computer data are lost.
- A new initialization of the sliding roof panel is required, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.
Removal
1. Turn off the ignition.

2. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Remove the luggage compartment floor covering. Turn the clamps 90° with a screwdriver and remove the shell.
3. The positive cable connector on the battery is covered by a bar. Fold it back.

4. Disconnect first the negative (-) "1" and then the positive (+) "2" battery cables.
5 Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Unscrew the mounting bolts "3" and remove the clamp.

6. Models 316i, 318i: Unscrew the mounting bolts "3" and remove the clamp. Remove the positive connector casing "4" and the battery casing. 1 - negative cable.
7. Fold back the handle and remove the battery.
The battery contains toxic components that must not be disposed of with household waste.
Installation
8. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Install the battery so that the poles point towards the wing.
9. Models 316i, 318i: Install the battery so that the poles point in the direction of travel.
10. Models 316i, 318i: Install the battery cover.
11. Install and secure the clamp.
12. Attach the positive (+) and then negative (-) cables to the terminals.
Make sure that the cables are connected correctly and that the contacts are clean. High transition resistance leads, particularly during start-up, to overloading of electronic control devices and, in extreme cases, can lead to their destruction.
13. Insert the positive terminal cover.
14. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Insert the plastic shell into the side cover. Insert the clips and secure them by turning them 90°. Insert the luggage compartment floor covering.
15. Set the clock.
16. Initialize the sunroof sliding panel, refer to Section Replacing the cabin air filter element.
