BMW engines must use all-season oils. This has the advantage that the oil does not have to be changed at the beginning of a new season (summer / winter). All-season oils are produced on the basis of low-viscosity seasonal oil (for example, 10 W). Thanks to the so-called thickener, the oil is stabilised in a hot state, so that the required lubricating capacity is achieved at each operating mode.
Low friction ones can also be used (energy saving) oils. Low-friction oils are all-season oils that, among other additives, contain friction modifier additives, due to which friction in engine units is reduced. The base oil for low-friction oils is synthetic oil. The information on the packaging that the oil is mineral, semi-synthetic or synthetic indicates only the composition of the base oil. When mixing base oil with additives, motor oils with completely different qualities can be obtained.
