Lubrication system — general information (BMW X5 E53)

Attention! It is not permitted to introduce additional additives of any kind into fuels and oils intended by BMW for their cars.

The car manufacturer has set its own standards for the use of oils, so for reliable operation of the engine it is necessary to use oils of quality according to the ACEA specification, for short-term use oils according to the CCMS specification are allowed. The lubrication system of all engines is combined - under pressure and spraying in the form of oil mist.

The car models are equipped with an oil pressure monitoring system that monitors its value and level depending on the engine crankshaft speed. The oil pressure in idle mode with a warm engine should be at least 0.5 kgf/cm². If the crankshaft speed is higher than or equal to the idle speed, and the pressure is below 0.5 kgf/cm², the oil pressure warning signal flashes on the instrument panel. At maximum speed: for an engine of 5000 – 6000 min⁻¹, the oil pressure should be within 4.0 – 4.7 kgf/cm².

The main reasons for the indicator to blink may be:
  • low oil level;
  • pressure sensor failure;
  • oil pump drive failure;
  • oil pump failure;
  • increased wear of crankshaft bearings.

Engine lubrication system capacity (including 0.5 l in the oil filter) – 8.0 l.

Oil is poured into the engine oil pan through the plug on the cylinder head cover.
