Standard engine oils for BMW 5-series cars (BMW 5 Series E39)

Petrol engines

It is recommended to use Longlife-Ole engine oils prescribed by BMW.

Note: For small replenishments between scheduled engine oil changes, you can use Spezialol engine oil or another oil that meets the AZ-96 specification according to the ACEA classification. Below are some examples of engine oils approved for use by BMW. A full list of oils approved for use is available from your BMW dealer.

Longlife-Ole with viscosity:

• SAE 0W-30: Castrol Formula SLX, DEA Ultec Syn-T, Esso Ultron, Shell Helix Ultra, Veedol Synthron.
• SAE 0W-40: Aral Super Tronic, BP Visco 7000, Mobil 1, Shell Helix Ultra.
• SAE 5W-30: Agip TECSINT, Aral Super Tronic, Castrol TXT, DEA Viscobil S1, Liqui Moly Profi Synthoil.
• SAE 5W-40: Agip Extra HTS, Aral High Tronic, BP Visco 5000, DEA Viscobil S1, Elf Synthese.

Special viscosity:

• SAE 5W-3D: Aral High Tronic, Castrol Formula LS, Jet Top Level, Valvoline High Performance Synthetic Motor Oil.
• SAE 5W-40: Castrol Formula RS Super Syntec, Esso Ultron, Gulf Formula G, Jet Gold, Karstadt Mach 1.
• SAE 10W-30: Shell Helix Diesel Plus, Shell Helix Plus.
• SAE 10W-40: Agip Sint 2000 GPX, Aral Basic Tronic, BP Visco 5000, Castrol GTX MAGNATEC, Esso Ultra.

Diesel engines

All motor oils that simultaneously comply with the AZ-96 and VZ-96 specifications of the ACEA classification are approved for use. Recommended viscosity classes: OW-X, 5W-X and 10W-X. The X symbol here replaces any number indicating the viscosity class, for example, 30, 40 or 50.
