Features of winter operation of a diesel engine (BMW X5 E53)

            0

Drivers during winter operation of the BMW X5 E53 with a diesel engine in low temperature conditions (below minus 15°C) and its design features (presence of fuel cooler) are faced with the problem of thickening of diesel fuel and precipitation of paraffin compounds. All this is closely related to the quality of diesel fuel, especially its winter grade. The use of special additives allows converting summer grades of diesel fuel into its winter analogue.

To improve the performance of summer diesel fuel in winter, kerosene (10 to 50%) or, in exceptional cases, only low-octane gasoline (up to 30%) should be added to it. This prevents the release of paraffin. Mixing should be done before driving, first pouring gasoline into the tank, then diesel fuel.

Caution! Adding kerosene reduces engine power.

If the engine does not start, then it is necessary:
  • remove the fuel filter and heat it in a water bath or replace the filter with a new one;
  • will install the car in a warm room (garage, workshop);
  • spray the fuel system with hot water;
  • install an electric heater on the fuel filter, manufactured by Bosch (Germany).

Warning! It is strictly prohibited to use an open flame to heat the fuel system of a diesel engine.
