Removal and installation the rear bumper (BMW 3 Series E36)
The design of the rear bumper is such that collisions at speeds of up to 4 km/h do not cause any damage. The collision energy is absorbed by the beam located inside and two rubber impact dampers.
Open the luggage compartment, remove the floor mat.
Remove two bolts and 1 nut securing the left luggage compartment floor trim.
If present, remove the battery cover.
Remove 1 bolt and 1 nut securing the right luggage compartment floor trim.
Remove three spacer clamps in the left and right wheel arches.
Unscrew the 4 nuts for a 13 mm spanner, the holes of which are indicated by arrows. Note: If the battery is in the luggage compartment, first unscrew the ground jumper with a 13 mm spanner. When the battery is disconnected, the information in the electronic memory devices is erased, for example, the engine fault memory or the memory of the radio security code. Disconnect the battery only with the ignition off, so as not to damage the fuel injection system control unit. When disconnecting the battery, follow the instructions in sections "Radio" and "Removing and installing the battery".
Pull out the bumper with an assistant.
Assemble the bumper (Figure W 48209). In this case, secure the shock absorbers to the bumper with a tightening torque of 45 Nm.
Align the bumper parallel to the body and tighten the bolts to a torque of 22 Nm.
If it was unscrewed, screw on the battery ground jumper.
