Removal and installation the heater fan (BMW 3 Series E46)
Air conditioner
Removal
1. Remove the air box in the engine compartment, refer to Section Removal and installation the air intake box.

2. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the heater locking wall "1" from the engine compartment wall "2", tilting it slightly upward.

3. Remove the fresh air flaps "1" on the left and right by moving lever "2" upward.

4. Disconnect the clamps "1", unscrew the screws "2" and remove the cover "3" of the fan motor.

5. Remove the screws (arrows in the illustration) and remove the fan cover.

6. Disconnect connector "1".
7. Open bracket "2" and fold it upward.
8. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Remove the top engine cover, refer to Section Spark plugs.
9. Disconnect and remove the fan motor "3" with the impeller forward. At the same time, slightly lift the motor from behind.
Installation
10. Insert the fan motor, making sure that the rear cover strip is fixed in the rear window of the motor.
11. Lower the mounting brackets and secure.
12. Connect the connector to the engine.
13. Secure the top cover with five bolts.
14. Insert the fan motor cover and secure it from above. Press the two clamps from below.

15. Connect the fresh air flaps on the left and right and fix them by moving the lever down.

16. Connect the heater locking wall "1" with two holders "2" at the bottom in the engine compartment wall. Insert the cover with both pins "3" into the holes "4" of the compartment wall and secure with two screws "5". The accompanying illustration shows only the left half of the cover.
17. Install the air collection box in the engine compartment, refer to Section Removal and installation the air intake box.
18. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Install the upper engine covers, refer to Section Spark plugs.
Heater without air conditioning
Removal
19. Remove the air box in the engine compartment, refer to Section Removal and installation the air intake box.

20. Remove the heater locking wall.
21 Loosen the four fan impeller mounting bolts and remove it.
22. Loosen the fan motor cover mounting bolt and remove it.
23. Disconnect the connector.
24. Open the electric motor mounting bracket and fold it upwards.
25. Models 320i, 323i, 328i: Remove the top engine covers, refer to Section Spark plugs.
26. Move the electric motor with the impeller forward and remove it. At the same time, slightly lift the electric motor back.
Installation
27. Install the electric motor. Make sure that the rear cover strip is fixed in the rear window of the engine.
28. Fold down the bracket and fix it.
29. Connect the electric motor connector.
30. Install the motor cover and secure with the bolt.
31. Install the fan wheel cover and secure with four screws.

32. Install the heater shut-off wall.
33. Install the air collection box in the engine compartment, refer to Section Removal and installation the air intake box.
34. 320i, 323i, 328i: Install the top engine covers.
