Replacing additional heater fan resistors (BMW 3 Series E46)
If the fan does not rotate at only one of the speeds, the cause is usually a defective resistor. In this case, it is necessary to replace the set of additional resistors.
1. Remove the fan wheel cover. The removal procedure is given in Section Removal and installation the heater fan.
2. Disconnect the connector and unscrew the screw securing the additional resistors from the electric motor.
1. Attach additional resistors to the electric motor, connect the connector.
2. Secure the fan wheel cover with four screws. For further operations, see Section Removal and installation the heater fan.
Cars with automatic air conditioning do not have additional resistors. The speed of the electric motor is regulated directly by the air conditioning control unit.
Removal
1. Remove the fan wheel cover. The removal procedure is given in Section Removal and installation the heater fan.
2. Disconnect the connector and unscrew the screw securing the additional resistors from the electric motor.
Installation
1. Attach additional resistors to the electric motor, connect the connector.
2. Secure the fan wheel cover with four screws. For further operations, see Section Removal and installation the heater fan.
