Replacing the oil filter (center bolt design) (BMW 7 Series E32)

Remove the center bolt in the middle of the oil filter cover.

Remove the center bolt in the middle of the oil filter cover.


Remove the oil filter cover with the center bolt.

Remove the oil filter cover with the center bolt.


Wait until the oil drains from the filter housing. Then remove the filter element. Wipe off any oil drops with a rag.

Insert the new filter element into the oil filter housing.

Caution: Follow the instructions printed on the oil filter.

Clean the oil filter cover, replace the rubber seals (arrows) on the center bolt and on the cover and lubricate them with engine oil.

Insert the oil filter cover with the central bolt evenly from above and press down. The central bolt will enter the corresponding threaded hole on the filter base.

Tighten the central bolt to 25 Nm.

Oil Filter Replacement, Threaded Cap Design

Unscrew the threaded cap using a 36 mm socket head. In specialized workshops, a special device is used for unscrewing, which is put on the outside of the cap.

Wait until the oil drains from the filter housing. Then remove the filter element.

Insert the new filter element into the oil filter housing.

Install the rubber sealing rings on the oil line and cover and lubricate them with engine oil.

Insert the oil filter cover with the oil pipe evenly from above and press it down. This will cause the oil pipe to enter the corresponding hole in the filter base.

Tighten the oil filter cover to 25 Nm.
