The following wearing parts must be purchased.
- Filter element. When purchasing, keep in mind that there are different filter elements for different types of engines.
Models 520i/525i from May 1990 and 530i/535i/524td: Loosen hose clamp 1 and disconnect the air inlet hose from the air cleaner. The illustration shows a diesel engine.
Open the "arrow" clamps of the filter housing. The number of clamps varies for different models.
Models 520i/525i produced since May 1990. (four-valve engines): Unscrew 2 bolts on the bracket.
Remove the cover and take out the filter element 1.
Wipe the filter housing with a cloth.
If there is slight contamination, carefully knock out the filter element with the dirty side down.
An oily filter must be replaced.
Caution: Do not clean the filter element with gasoline or coat it with oil. Do not blow the filter with compressed air.
Installation
Insert the filter element into the air filter housing.
Place the cover on top. On a diesel engine, make sure that the cover tabs fit into the bottom. Close the clamp locks.
If removed, connect the air hose and secure it with a clamp.
Four-valve engine: Insert the air filter housing and screw it to the bracket.
