Removal water and replacing the fuel filter (BMW 5 Series E34)

Regardless of engine power, the fuel filter must be replaced every 80,000 km. On a diesel engine, water must also be removed from the filter regularly as part of the maintenance schedule.

No special tool required.

The following wearing parts must be purchased:
  • Fuel filter according to engine type.

Petrol engines



The fuel filter is located under the bottom of the car on the right in front of the fuel tank. Therefore, a jack and stands are required. In addition, it is necessary to have two clamps to close the supply and outlet fuel hoses. You can also use clamps.

Removal



Warning: Do not light open flames. Risk of fire!


Raise the car.

Raise the car.


Clamp off fuel hose 1 from the fuel pump to the filter.

Close the fuel hose 2 with a clamp and disconnect it from the filter, having first released the clamp.

Unscrew filter bracket 3 and pull out the filter with the fuel hose.

Disconnect the fuel hose from the fuel filter, having first loosened the clamp.

Installation



Installation


Connect the hose going to the distribution pipe to the new filter 1 and secure with a clamp.



Connect the second hose 3 to the filter and secure with a clamp.

Insert the filter with the elastic gasket and screw the bracket. Ensure the correct installation position of the fuel filter. Arrow 2 on the filter body should indicate the direction of fuel flow.

Remove the clamps from the hoses.

Start the engine and check the tightness of the fuel hose connections.

Lower the car.
