Removal water and replacing the diesel engine fuel filter (BMW 5 Series E34)

Removing water from the fuel filter should be done within the framework of the maintenance schedule every 10,000 km, but not less than once a year. The fuel filter should be replaced every 80,000 km. The fuel filter is located in the engine compartment on the left side. A suitable vessel is required to drain the water from the filter.

Caution: Spills on rubber parts (water hoses) diesel fuel should be wiped off immediately with a wet cloth, as it will corrode these parts over time.

Removal water

Loosen the air release bolt 1 on the top side of the filter a few turns. The illustration shows the removed fuel filter.

Place a suitable container under drain plug 3.

Unscrew the filter from the bottom by hand a few turns. If the bolt does not unscrew, use pliers or a pipe wrench with a leather gasket,

Drain about 200 cm³ of water sediment until clean diesel fuel comes out. Tighten the water release bolt by hand.

Tighten the air bleed bolt on the top of the filter.

Check the fuel system for leaks. To do this, start the engine. After repeatedly applying gas, fuel free of air bubbles should flow through the transparent hose to the high-pressure fuel pump.

Filter replacement

Drain the sediment from the filter in the same way as when removing water.



Unscrew the fuel filter from the filter flange 1 by hand or, if it is firmly seated, with a tension wrench, for example HAZET 2170.

If you don't have a tension wrench, unscrew the two bolts 2 and remove the filter with the flange. Secure the flange in a vice. First, unscrew the supply and outlet fuel hoses. In addition, disconnect the connectors of the filter heating element and the water level sensor in the filter.

Replace the cover on the new filter.

Fill the new filter to the brim with diesel fuel and screw it on by hand.

Caution: Do not overtighten the filter. After the gasket is seated against the flange, tighten it another ½ turn. Follow the instructions written on the filter.

If necessary, install the flange with the filter and connect both connectors.

After a test drive, check the fuel system for leaks.
