Tightening torques for connections, Nm (BMW 3 Series E46)

Note: Some connections use bolts of different classes. The class of each bolt is stamped on its head. Make sure that the bolts are tightened to the correct torque for their class.

Mounting bolts:
  • Front bolt - 95
  • Rear bolts - 174

Drain and filler plug - 70

Drive shaft flange fastening nuts (approximately - see text):
  • Nuts M20 - 175
  • Nuts M22 - 185

Torsional vibration damper (if it exists) to bracket - 77

Leading Vali



Drive shaft fastening nut*:
  • Nut M22 - 200
  • Nut M24 - 250
  • Nut M27 - 300

Bolts for fastening the shaft to the main gear flange

Allen head bolts

Bolts M10:
  • Serrated Head Bolts - 96
  • Bolts without serrated end under the head - 83

Bolts M12 - 110

Slotted Head Bolts

Bolts M10:
  • Smooth bolts - 83
  • Black serrated head bolts - 100
  • Silver colored serrated head bolts - 80

Bolts M8 - 64

Bolts M12 - 135

Cardan shaft

  • Bolts class 8.8 (see designation on bolt head) — 48
  • Bolts class 10.9 (see marking on bolt head) — 64

Bolts M12:
