Tightening torques of the main connections of the M54 engine (BMW X5 E53)
Engine cylinder block
Bolts (M10) for fastening the crankshaft main bearing caps (replace bolts, do not wash off the coating of the bolts and lubricate with engine oil) – 20 Nm + 70°;
Stiffening insert (stretch):
- M8 - 22 Nm;
- M10 — 43 Nm.
Coolant drain plug (M14x1.5) – 25 Nm.
Threaded plug (M12x1.5) of the main lubrication channel – 20 Nm;
- all M16x1.5 - 34 Nm;
- all M18x1.5 — 40 Nm.
Oil nozzle, bolt (M8x1.0) – 12 Nm.
Cylinder head
Cylinder head cover:
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M7 - 15 Nm.
Threaded plug (M12x1.5) of the lubrication channel – 20 Nm;
Air bleed screw – 2.0 Nm.
Bolts (M10) for fastening the cylinder head (replace the bolts, wash them, do not wash off the coating of the bolts, and lubricate with engine oil) – 40 Nm + 90° + 90°.
Oil pan
Oil drain plug:
- all M12x1.5 - 25 Nm;
- all M18x1.5 - 30 Nm;
- all M22x1.5 - 60 Nm;
Oil pan to cylinder block:
- all M6 (8.8) - 10 Nm;
- all M6 (10.9) - 12 Nm;
- all M8 (8.8) — 22 Nm.
Timing Belt Cover
Timing belt block, its upper and lower covers:
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M7 - 15 Nm;
- all M8 - 22 Nm;
- all M10 - 47 Nm.
Crankshaft with support
Replace the toothed wheel of the speed sensor of the crankshaft speed sensor to the crankshaft, bolts:
- all M5 (10.9) — 13 Nm;
- all M5 (8.8) — 5.5 Nm.
Flywheel
Flywheel to engine crankshaft, replace bolts, with automatic transmission – 105 Nm.
Torsional vibration damper
Pulley to hub vibration damper, bolts M8 – 22 Nm;
Torsional vibration damper for crankshaft (central bolt, M18x1.5), replace bolt – 410 Nm;
Connecting rod with bearings
Replace connecting rod bolts, wash and lubricate with engine oil – 5 Nm + 20 Nm + 70°;
Camshaft
Camshaft Bearing Cap:
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M7 - 14 Nm;
- all M8 - 20 Nm.
Sprocket to camshaft:
- M54 M7 - 5.0 Nm + 20 Nm;
Chain Tensioner Cap Nut:
- all M22x1.5 — 40 Nm.
Chain Tensioner Plunger Cylinder:
- M54 M26x1.5 — 70 Nm;
Camshaft stud in the cylinder head body:
- all M7 - 20 Nm.
Nut on the camshaft stud:
- all M6 - 10 Nm.
Variable valve timing system, vanos
Hollow bolt (M14x1.5) of the actuator unit – 32 Nm.
Threaded plug (M22x1.5) of the actuator unit – 50 Nm.
Precision bolt (M6, left-hand thread) tensioner plunger in splined shaft –10 Nm.
Pipe to oil filter support – 32 Nm.
Actuator unit for intake and exhaust camshafts (replace bolts M10x1.0) – 80 Nm.
Lubrication system
Oil pump to the crankcase, bolt M8 – 23 Nm.
Oil pump cover (M6) – 10 Nm.
Sprocket to oil pump:
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M10x1 - 25 Nm;
- all M10 - 45 Nm.
Full flow oil filter (cover):
- all M8 - 22 Nm;
- all M10 - 33 Nm;
- all M12 - 33 Nm;
- screw cap - 25 Nm.
Oil filter housing and lines to the engine crankcase:
- all M8 - 22 Nm;
- all M20x1.5 — 40 Nm.
Oil line for lubrication of bearing beds and camshaft cams:
- all M6 - 10 Nm.
Oil line for lubrication of camshaft cams to cylinder head (hollow bolt):
- all M5 - 5.0 Nm;
- all M8x1 — 10 Nm.
Oil lines from the oil radiator to the oil filter housing:
- all M8 - 22 Nm.
Cooling system
Coolant pump to the engine crankcase:
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M7 - 15 Nm;
- all M8 - 22 Nm.
Fan drive clutch to coolant pump (left-hand thread union nut):
- all - 40 Nm.
Thermostat housing:
- all M6 - 10 Nm.
Bleed nipple:
- all M8 - 8.0 Nm.
Intake manifold
Intake manifold to cylinder head:
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M7 - 15 Nm;
- all M8 - 22 Nm.
Exhaust manifold
Exhaust manifold (collector) to cylinder head. Replace nuts, lubricate threaded connections with copper-containing paste type "Molykote-HSC":
- all M6 - 10 Nm;
- all M7 - 20 Nm;
- all M8 - 23 Nm;
Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor:
- M18x1.5 — 50 Nm.
Ignition system
Spark plugs:
- all M12x1.25 — 23±3 Nm;
- all M14x1.25 — 30±3 Nm.
Electronic control unit (ECU) of the ignition system:
- all - 2.5 Nm.
Knock Sensor:
- all - 20 Nm.
Crankshaft speed sensor and its position at the top dead center (TDC) of the first cylinder. Bolt (M6) is subject to replacement - 10 N·m.
Electronic control module compartment cover – 4.4 Nm.
Generator
Wires to the generator:
- contact D+ (M6) - 7.0 Nm;
- contact B+ (M8) — 13 Nm.
Generator pulley – 45 Nm.
Rear clamp – 3.5 Nm.
Wire retainer cylinder bolt – 3.5 Nm.
Voltage regulator:
- all M4 - 2.0 Nm;
- all M5 - 4.0 Nm.
Starter
Fastening the starter to the gearbox housing – 47 Nm.
Starter support bracket – 5.0 Nm.
Support bracket to the crankcase – 47 Nm.
Wires to the starter:
- all M5 - 5.0 Nm.
- all M6 - 7.0 Nm.
- all M8 - 13 Nm.
Heat shield to starter – 6 Nm.
Engine Wiring Harness and Electrical Equipment
Terminal "+" AB to the contact in the engine compartment - 21 Nm;
Oil pressure, oil temperature and oil level sensors – 27 Nm;
Coolant temperature sensor – 20 Nm.
Inlet air temperature sensor – 13 Nm.
Air flow meter – 4.5 Nm.
Camshaft position sensor – 4.5 Nm;
Fuel supply system
Fuel tank to the body on a tension strap:
- all bolts M8 - 20 Nm;
- all nuts M8 - 19 Nm.
Tie-down strap M8 – 20 Nm.
Connections to the fuel pump:
- all M4 - 1.2 Nm;
- all M5 - 1.6 Nm.
Hose clamps:
- all (10 – 16 mm) — 2.0 N·m;
- all (18 – 33 mm) — 3.0 N·m;
- all (37 – 43 mm) – 4.0 Nm.
Filler neck to body (M6) – 9.0 Nm.
Activated carbon filter – 9.0 Nm.
Dust filter – 1.8 Nm.
Fuel level indicator sensor retaining ring – 45±5 N·m.
Fuel tank drain plug:
- all - 25 Nm.
Accelerator pedal module to body – 19 Nm.
Cooling system
Coolant hose clamps (32–48 mm) – 2.5 Nm.
Cooling system bleed screw – 8.0 Nm.
Fastening the radiator to the body (M6) – 10 Nm.
Radiator drain plug thread – 2.5 Nm;
Fastening the expansion tank to the body – 9.0 Nm.
Fastening the oil radiator to the body – 14 Nm.
Fastening pipelines to the automatic transmission oil cooler – 25 Nm.
Oil cooler pipe brackets – 10 Nm.
Union nut (M18x1.5) of the oil line fitting to the automatic transmission and radiator – 20 Nm.
Hollow oil line bolt:
- M14x1.5 — 27 Nm;
- M16x1.5 — 37 Nm.
Branch pipes (pipelines) oil cooler for automatic transmission:
- M14x1.5 — 37 Nm;
- M16x1.5 — 37 Nm.
Exhaust system
Muffler clamp – 15 Nm.
Front muffler to rear muffler – 30 Nm.
Engine mount
Engine mount cushion to front axle beam – 19 Nm.
Engine mount cushion to engine support bracket – 56 Nm;
Fastening the engine mount bracket to the engine:
- all M8 (8.8) — 19 Nm;
- all M10 (8.8) — 38 Nm.
