Checking hydraulic tappets (BMW X5 E53)

            0

All engines of the M54, M62 and N62 models installed on BMW X5/E53 series vehicles are equipped with hydraulic valve lifters. The hydraulic lifters must be checked when noise is detected in the valve drive, when the engine reaches operating temperature, in the following order.

Warm up the engine and let it idle until the cooling fan turns on. Increase the crankshaft speed to 2500 min for 2-3 minutes.

Make sure there is no noise from the hydraulic tappets. If it is heard with a stethoscope, stop the engine and remove the cylinder head cover.

Set the automatic/manual transmission gear selector lever to neutral. Apply the parking brake. Rotate the crankshaft only by the central vibration damper mounting bolt until the camshaft cams of the cylinder being tested are in neutral.

Try to move the cylindrical pusher down using a wooden or plastic wedge (fig. 3.132).

If the free travel of the hydraulic tappet exceeds 0.1 mm, it should be replaced.

Attention! After replacing the hydraulic tappet, wait 30 minutes before rotating the engine camshaft.
