All versions of the DME system have the ability to save service functions: when sensors fail, the control unit relies on the average values of the accumulated values for the respective sensors. In the event of a failure of the volumetric or mass air flow meter, the control unit takes data on the position of the throttle valve and the crankshaft speed as reference values. This adjustment takes place automatically. and the driver is not informed about this. The trip can continue as the vehicle's performance deteriorates very little. However, the resulting malfunctions are recognized by the control unit and stored in the form of codes. Therefore, it is advisable to contact a BMW workshop and read the contents of the fault code memory even if there are no obvious defects, for example, when measuring the level of exhaust toxicity on a regular basis.
Attention: When the battery is disconnected or when the multi-pin plug connector of the control unit is disconnected, all accumulated fault codes are erased.
