Checking the axial clearance of the crankshaft (BMW 3 Series E21)

Install the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer with a new gasket.

Install the flywheel onto the crankshaft. Lock the flywheel with a locking pin and tighten the new mounting bolts, after applying a sealant such as Loctite 270 to them.

Remove the retainer. Install the stand with the indicator so that the indicator leg rests on the ground surface of the flywheel. By moving the shaft in the longitudinal direction with the lever, measure the axial clearance of the shaft with the indicator, which should be within 0.085-0.174 mm.
