Checking the engine oil level and replacing it (BMW X5 E53)
Attention! Before changing the oil, protect the generator from contamination by covering it with film.
During operation, the oil is subject to dilution and contamination by engine wear products. Engine oil should be changed once a year or every 15,000 km for gasoline engines and 10,000 km for diesel engines. Under severe operating conditions, replacement should be done twice as often. The oil filter should be replaced at the same time as the oil.

- Check the engine oil level with a dipstick (Fig. 2.16) and restore it to normal. The oil level should be between the two marks. Add oil to the upper mark ("MAX").
- Warm up the engine by driving 25-30 km at high speed.
- After stopping the engine, wait 5-7 minutes (M54 and M62) or 10-12 minutes (M57 and N62) for the oil to drain into the oil pan, and carefully inspect the engine for possible oil leaks.
- Check the oil level on a clean indicator (dipstick). The difference between the marks on the dipstick is approximately 1 liter of oil.

Warning! Do not deviate from the oil level beyond the marks on the dipstick, it is dangerous in any direction. Fill only with high-quality oil
- Check the condition of the oil itself. If the oil is milky or if drops of water can be seen in its composition, this indicates a leak in the cylinder head gasket and a crack in the head or cylinder block.
- After changing the oil, you must start the engine and let it idle until the oil pressure indicator goes out.
- Check the tightness of the oil filter housing and drain plug. Remove traces of oil.
- Send the drained oil for disposal.
Each engine has its own characteristics.
Engine "M54"
When carrying out maintenance according to regulations "Oelservice" when changing the oil, the car must be strictly horizontal. Unscrew and tighten the full-flow oil filter cover only with a socket wrench with a replaceable head. When unscrewing the filter cover, oil flows from its housing into the oil pan.
- Unscrew the oil filter cover and remove it with an upward movement.
- Drain the oil from the engine by opening the filler cap in the engine protection panel and unscrewing the plug (arrow, Fig. 2.17) drain hole and drain the oil. Dispose of the oil.
- When installing the oil drain plug, it is necessary to replace the sealing ring, tighten the M18x1.5 plug to a torque of 30 N·m (3.0 kgf·m), and tighten the M22x1.5 plug to a torque of 60 N·m (6.0 kgf·m).
- When installing the filter cover, it is necessary to replace the O-rings (arrows, Fig. 2.19), lubricate them with oil and tighten the filter cover to a torque of 33 N·m (3.3 kgf·m).
- Fill the engine with oil, start it and let the engine idle until the oil pressure indicator goes out. Turn off the engine, wait about 5-7 minutes, and then check the oil level. Add oil if necessary.



Engine "M62"
When carrying out maintenance according to regulations "Oelservice" when changing the oil in the M62 engine, proceed in the same way as for the M54 engine, but it is necessary to remove the filter element from the cover.
- When installing, position the filter element so that it fits into the groove of the cover.
- when installing the filter cover, it is necessary to replace the O-ring (arrow, Fig. 2.19), lubricate it with oil and tighten the filter cover to a torque of 33 N·m (3.3 kgf·m).
Engine "N62"
When carrying out maintenance according to regulations "Oelservice" when changing the oil in the "N62" engine, proceed in the same way as for the "M62" engine, but it is necessary to open the hatch in the stiffening plate or remove it.

- Unscrew the drain plug (M18) in the oil pan (1, Fig. 2.20). Unscrew the plug (2) of the oil drain hole in the cover (3) of the oil filter (3). Unscrew the cover of the oil filter.
- When installing, replace all sealing rings, after lubricating them with engine oil. Replace the replacement element (1, Fig. 3.16) oil filter and insert the cover into the oil filter.

Tighten the filter cover to a torque of 33 N·m (3.3 kgf·m), tighten the plug in the filter cover to a torque of 10 N·m (1.0 kgf·m), tighten the plug (M18) of the oil drain hole to a torque of 35 N·m (3.5 kgf·m).
Engine "M57"
When carrying out maintenance according to regulations "Oelservice" when changing the oil, it is necessary to use a similar technology, taking into account that the threaded plug (M12, 1, Fig. 2.21) should be tightened to a torque of 25 N·m (2.5 kgf·m).
