Attention! Before changing the oil, protect the generator from contamination by covering it with foil.
During operation, the oil is subjected to dilution and contamination with engine wear products. The engine oil must be changed once a year or at intervals of 15,000 km for petrol engines and 10,000 km for diesel engines. In severe operating conditions, replacement should be carried out twice as often. Change the oil filter at the same time as changing the oil.
- Check the engine oil level with a dipstick (pic. 2.16) and restore it back to normal. The oil level must be between the two marks. Add oil up to the upper mark («MAX»).
- Warm up the engine by driving 25-30 km at high speed.
- After stopping the engine, wait 5-7 minutes. («M54» And «M62») or 10-12 min. («M57» And «N62»), to drain the oil into the sump, and carefully inspect the engine for a possible oil leak.
- Check the oil level on a clean dipstick (dipstick). The difference between the marks on the dipstick is approximately 1 liter of oil.
Attention! Do not deviate from the oil level beyond the marks on the dipstick, it is dangerous in any direction. Use only good quality oil
- Check the condition of the oil itself. If the oil has a milky color or drops of water can be seen in its composition, then this indicates a violation of the tightness of the cylinder head gasket and the presence of a crack in the head or cylinder block.
- After changing the oil, start the engine and let it idle until the oil pressure indicator goes out.
- Check the tightness of the oil filter housing and drain plug. Remove traces of oil.
- Dispose of the drained oil for recycling.
Each engine has its own characteristics.
Engine «M54»
When carrying out maintenance according to the regulations «Oelservice» when changing the oil, it is necessary that the car is in a strictly horizontal position. Unscrew and tighten the cover of the full-flow oil filter only with a socket wrench with an exchangeable head. When the filter cover is unscrewed, oil flows from the filter housing into the oil pan.
- Unscrew the oil filter cap and remove it towards the top.
- Drain the engine oil by opening the filler cap in the engine protection panel and unscrewing the plug (arrow, fig. 2.17) oil drain hole and drain the oil. Send oil for recycling.
- When installing the oil drain plug, it is necessary to replace the sealing ring, tighten the M18x1.5 plug with a torque of 30 Nm (3.0 kgf·m), tighten the M22x1.5 plug with a torque of 60 Nm (6.0 kgf·m).
- When installing the filter cover, the O-rings must be replaced (arrows, fig. 2.19), lubricate them with oil, and tighten the filter cover with a torque of 33 Nm (3.3 kgf·m).
- Fill the engine with oil, start it and let the engine idle until the oil pressure indicator goes off. Stop the engine, wait about 5-7 minutes, and then check the oil level. Add oil if necessary.
Engine «M62»
When carrying out maintenance according to the regulations «Oelservice» when changing engine oil «M62» act like an engine «M54», while removing the filter element from the cover.
- When installing the filter element, install it so that it fits into the groove of the cover.
- . When installing the filter cover, the O-ring must be replaced (arrow, fig. 2.19), lubricate it with oil, and tighten the filter cover with a torque of 33 Nm (3.3 kgf·m).
Engine «N62»
When carrying out maintenance according to the regulations «Oelservice» when changing engine oil «N62» act like an engine «M62», in this case it is necessary to open the hatch in the stiffening plate or remove it.
- Remove the cork (M18) drain hole in the oil pan (1, fig. 2.20). Remove the cork (2) oil drain hole in the lid (3) oil filter (3). Unscrew the oil filter cap.
- When installing, replace all O-rings after lubricating them with engine oil. Replace replacement element (1, fig. 3.16) oil filter and insert the cap into the oil filter.

Tighten the filter cover to 33 Nm (3.3 kgf·m), tighten the plug in the filter cover with a torque of 10 Nm (1.0 kgf·m), cork (M18) oil drain hole tighten to 35 Nm (3.5 kgf·m).
Engine «M57»
When carrying out maintenance according to the regulations «Oelservice» when changing the oil, it is necessary to use a similar technology, taking into account the fact that the screw plug (M12, 1, fig. 2.21) should be tightened with a torque of 25 Nm (2.5 kgf·m).
