Checking the engine oil level (BMW 5 Series E39)

            0

Approximately every 1000 km or before a long trip, it is necessary to check the oil level in the engine and top it up if necessary. The engine should consume no more than 1 liter of oil per 1000 km of travel.

Higher oil consumption indicates worn valve stem seals and/or piston rings or seals.

When measuring, the car must be on a horizontal surface.

After stopping the engine, wait at least 3 minutes for the oil to collect in the pan.

Remove the oil level indicator from the engine and wipe it with a clean cloth.

Remove the oil level indicator from the engine and wipe it with a clean cloth.

Then insert the oil level indicator into the engine until it stops and pull it out again. The oil level should be between the two marks on the indicator.

Add fresh oil only when the oil level approaches the lower mark. For all engine types, the difference in oil quantities between the tech and min marks on the oil level indicator is 1 liter.

Top up oil through the branch pipe on the cylinder head cover. Top up only with oil of the appropriate grade, do not use any additives to the oil, see section "Lubrication system".

Caution: Do not allow the oil level in the sump to rise above the upper mark. This increases oil loss and, in addition, may lead to failure of the catalytic converter.
