Removal and installation rear shock absorbers (BMW 3 Series E30)

Removal



Raise the rear of the car.

Support the diagonal lever "4" with a jack "5", placing a wooden pad "6" underneath.

Caution: If the rear wheel is lowered significantly after removing the shock absorber, the constant velocity joints "3" of the axle shafts may be damaged.

Unscrew the shock absorber from the diagonal arm "7".

Partially remove the luggage compartment trim.

Remove cap "2".

Unscrew nuts "1" of the centering cup in the wheel arch.

Remove the shock absorber.

Remove the gasket between the centering cup and the wheel arch.

Caution: Store the shock absorber only in a vertical position, otherwise knocking noises may occur during use.


Installation



Check the shock absorber (see section "Checking the shock absorber").

If necessary, tighten the rubber strut to the shock absorber with a tightening torque of 15 Nm and tighten the lock nut.

Insert the shock absorber from below and tighten 2 new self-locking nuts into the luggage compartment with a tightening torque of 22 Nm.

Put on the cap.

Install the luggage compartment trim.

Tighten the lower shock absorber mount to a tightening torque of 90 Nm

Tighten the lower shock absorber mount to a tightening torque of 90 Nm


Remove the jack and lower the vehicle.
