Removal and installation the rear axle gearbox (BMW 7 Series E38)

1. Remove the exhaust system and its heat shields.

2. Disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear axle gearbox (see section Removal and installation the cardan shaft and elastic coupling).

3. Remove and tie the drive shafts of the left and right wheels to the body (see section Removal and installation drive shafts).

4. Support the gearbox with jack No.00 2 030 and tool No.33 4 390.

5. Remove the bolt.

6. Remove the nuts from the left and right sides.



Use new self-locking nuts when installing.


7. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Make sure that the bolt (1) is inserted from the correct side. Finally, check the oil level in the gearbox housing and adjust the level if necessary.
