Replacing drive shaft dust boots (BMW 7 Series E38)

1. Remove the drive shaft and clean it (see section Removal and installation drive shafts).

When installing, press the cover on using a thrust ring, having previously lubricated its mating surfaces.

3. Loosen the clamp (2), remove the cover (3) with the dust cover and the retaining ring (4).

When installing, turn the new boot with cap (3) so that the clamp of the large clamp is located between the two holes of the CV joint.


4. Press the splined shaft out of the CV joint, thoroughly clean the joint from old grease. Check the CV joint for damage, replace if necessary.

5. Remove the dust cover from the splined shaft.

6. Place the boot on the cover, lubricate the mating surfaces and press onto the CV joint.



7. Fill the CV joint with high temperature grease, insert a new retaining ring and press the CV joint with the cover over the inner bearing race onto the splined shaft.

8. Place the new boot onto the splined shaft.

9. To replace the outer joint boot, open the boot clamps and remove it. Clean the joint thoroughly and remove old grease. Put it on new dust boot, thoroughly clean the joint in the assembled state and completely remove the old grease.
