General information about cardan and drive shafts (BMW 7 Series E38)
The vehicles in question have rear-wheel drive. Torque is transmitted to the wheels via drive shafts from the rear axle differential, which in turn is driven from the manual transmission or automatic transmission via a cardan shaft. The variable angle of inclination of the drive shafts is achieved via constant velocity joints (CV joints) placed in protective covers.
