Changing the oil in the rear axle differential gearbox
The oil in the rear axle differential gearbox must be changed as part of the vehicle maintenance schedule every 60,000 km.
Make a short trip to allow the oil in the rear axle differential gear to reach operating temperature.
Raise the vehicle horizontally.
Loosen the oil filler plug.
If some oil leaks out, the oil level was 8 normal and the gearbox has no leaks. Otherwise, use your finger to check if the oil reaches the lower edge of the hole.
Attention: If there is a large lack of oil, find and eliminate the cause.
Unscrew the drain plug and drain the oil into a container.
Attention: Old oil is handed over to special waste collection points. The address of the nearest point can be found in the city or village administration. In addition, used oil is accepted free of charge when buying new oil. In no case should you drink old oil and do not throw it away with household garbage: this causes irreparable harm to the environment, such as pollution of water bodies.
The drain plug has a magnet that collects metal chips in the gearbox. Clean the cork from metal filings.
Pour oil from the oiler.
Oil specification: Hypoid gear oil SAE 90. Use only oils recommended by BMW (written on the packaging).
Filling capacity: 1.7L.
Caution: The oil is viscous. Don't pour in too much oil right away. Maintain pauses and substitute a vessel to collect the flowing oil.
Screw in the filler plug with a tightening torque of 55 Nm.
Checking the cuffs of the semiaxes
Raise the car.
Pay attention to visible traces of grease on the cuffs and around.
Check fastening of clamps.
Examine the rubber cuffs with a lamp for cracking and tearing. Be sure to replace torn cuffs of the hinges.
If the cuff is compressed due to internal vacuum or is damaged, it must be replaced immediately.
