Reverse Light Switch — Checking, Removing and Installing (BMW 3 Series E46)
Examination
1. The reverse light switch is closed by a plunger switch screwed into the gearbox (on the left in the Geirag gearbox, and on the right in the ZF gearbox). If there is a fault in the lamp target, first check the circuit fuse for damage.
2. To check the switch, disconnect the wiring connector and check (with an ohmmeter or test light) the presence of contact between the switch terminals only when reverse gear is engaged. If there is no contact between the terminals, and the wiring is in good condition, this indicates a faulty switch and the need to replace it.
Removal
3. Raise the vehicle and support it (see "Lifting and supporting the vehicle").
4. Disconnect the electrical wiring connector and unscrew the switch from the gearbox housing (Fig. 6.4).

Installation
5. Screw the switch into the gearbox and tighten it securely. Connect the wiring connector and check the circuit for proper operation.
6. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
