Checking the gearbox oil level (BMW 3 Series E46)

1. For easier access, raise the front of the vehicle and support it on jack stands (see "Lifting and Supporting the Vehicle"). Make sure the vehicle is level.

2. Unscrew the plug of the check/fill hole of the gearbox, located on the right side of the gearbox housing (Fig. 2.2).



3. The oil level should reach the lower edge of the hole.

4. If necessary, top up the oil level to the required level. Use the recommended type of oil (see "Lubricants and Fluids") and add oil until it appears in the hole.

5. Wipe off all traces of oil, then screw in the plug and tighten it to the specified torque.

6. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
