Checking the fuel level in the float chambers (BMW 5 Series E12)

Remove the carburetor cover.

Measure the distance between the cover joint plane and the highest point of the float with a ruler (the float should be in contact with the needle valve without pressing on the ball of the latter), which should be 28 mm for the 1st chamber, 30 mm for the 2nd chamber.

Check the mass of each float, which should be 6.2±0.3 g.
