
1. Loosen the selector lever knob retaining screw and remove the knob. Pry and remove the trim panel around the base of the selector lever.
If the terminal layout of the start enable switch connector on your vehicle does not match any of the diagrams below, special procedures may be required to check the sensor. In this case, have the sensor checked by a BMW dealer or auto repair shop.

2. On earlier models, disconnect the connectors.
3. Then check the continuity between the following terminals:
Selector position | Terminals |
"P" | 3 and 4 |
"R" | 3 and 5 |
"N" | 3 and 6 |
"D" | 3 and 7 |
3 | 3 and 1 |
2 | 3 and 8 |
1 | 3 and 9 |

4. On later models, disconnect the connectors.
5. Then check the continuity between the following terminals:
Selector position | Terminals |
"P" | 1 and 3 and 7 |
"R" | 1 and 4 and 7; 5 and 6 |
"N" | 1 and 2 and 3 |
"D" | 1 and 4 |
3 | 1 and 2 |
2 | 1 and 7 |
1 | 1 and 2 and 7 |
