Replacing the ignition switch (BMW X5 E53)

The ignition switch must be replaced in the following order. Remove the upper and lower steering column trim covers. Unlock and disconnect the steering column from the ignition switch. Unscrew the bolts (1, Fig. 16.16) and move the wire harness holder (2) a little.



Remove the sealing paint and unscrew the countersunk screws (1, Fig. 16.17) ignition switch fastenings. Pull the ignition switch (2) in the direction indicated by the arrow and remove it.



When installing, cover the heads of the countersunk screws with sealing paint.
