Checking/Replacing the Brake Light Switch (BMW 5 Series E39)
The brake light switch is located in the driver's side footwell near the brake pedal.
If the brake light does not come on, check the fuse first. Then check the bulbs. If the corresponding bulbs are OK, check the brake light switch.
Remove the footwell trim (above the pedal).
Disconnect the plug from the brake light switch by squeezing the retaining tabs.
Turn on the ignition.
Connect both contacts of the disconnected plug with a short jumper. If the brake light now lights up when the brake pedal is pressed, replace the brake light switch.
Remove the left footwell trim.
Squeeze the locking tabs and disconnect the wire with the plug from the switch.
Press the brake pedal. Pull the plunger "1" and the bushing "2" fully forward (arrow at position 3).
In this position, press the locking tabs "arrows" and move the brake light switch backwards from the holder (position 4).
Insert the switch with the sleeve completely removed into the holder on the brake pedal bracket and secure it.
Press the red safety sleeve into the switch so that the flange of the sleeve is adjacent to the pedal bracket.
Connect the plug to the switch and secure it.
Check if the brake light comes on when the ignition is on and the brake pedal is pressed.
Install the footwell trim.
