Replacing spark plugs and ignition coils (BMW 7 Series E38)

Description of replacement of spark plugs is given in Section Replacing spark plugs Chapters Vehicle settings and routine maintenance. The replacement of ignition coils is described below.

M52 and M52TU engines



1. Remove the ignition coil protective cover.

2. In the version with separate ignition coils, disconnect their connectors.

3. In the version with rod-shaped ignition coils, disconnect their connectors and remove the coil with an upward movement.

4. In the version with separate ignition coils, unscrew their mounting bolts and remove the coils. When installing, secure the ground connection jumpers.



M60 and M62 engines



1. Remove the decorative engine cover.

2. Remove the plugs on the ignition coil housings, unscrew the nuts and remove the housings.

When installing, check the condition of the casing gasket and replace it if necessary.

3. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors.

4. Loosen the ignition coil fasteners and remove them.



5. When installing, secure the ground jumpers to the coils of cylinders No.3 and No.6.
