Adjusting the selector lever drive (BMW 5 Series E28)

Jack up the vehicle and support it securely on axle stands. On some models, you may have to remove the exhaust system (see chapter Exhaust system) and a heat shield to gain access to the lower end of the selector lever.

1. Release the retaining clamp (1) on the pin (2) of the selector rod.

2. Pull out the pin and disconnect the selector rod from the lower end of the lever.

3. Move the transmission selector lever back until it stops, then forward two clicks. The transmission is now in the "N" (Neutral) position.

4. When working inside the vehicle, set the selector lever to the "N" (Neutral) position.

5. Have an assistant push the selector lever forward until it is against the neutral stop on the selector linkage. Working underneath the vehicle, turn the pin on the selector rod until it aligns with the hole in the lower end of the selector lever. Shorten the drive by turning the pin another clockwise turn or two.

6. Install the selector shaft pin. Check that the drive is adjusted correctly by starting the engine, pressing the brake firmly and moving the selector lever through all positions.

1. In the vehicle, place the selector lever in the "P" (Park) position.

The drive shown in the photo (for the latest models), is typical; however, some older models may have the lever pointing up instead of down, and use a rocker arm design between the rod and the lever instead of a nut.


3. Move the selector lever on the transmission forward (to the engine) and pull the selector cable rod back.

4. Connect the cable rod to the selector lever on the transmission and tighten the nut securely.

5. Check that the drive is adjusted correctly by starting the engine, pressing the brake firmly and moving the selector lever through all positions.
