Inspect or repair the exhaust system only when the system is completely cold. When working under the vehicle, make sure it is securely installed.
Silencer and pipes
The exhaust system consists of an exhaust manifold, mufflers and all connecting pipes, brackets, hangers and clamps. The exhaust system is fixed to the body with the help of brackets and rubber suspensions.
If any parts are not secured correctly, excessive noise and vibration may be transmitted to the bodywork.
Regularly inspect the exhaust system. Look for damaged or bent parts, open seams, holes, loose connections, severe corrosion, or other defects that allow exhaust gases to enter the vehicle. In general, worn exhaust system components cannot be satisfactorily repaired; they should be replaced.
If the components of the exhaust system are joined together due to severe corrosion or rust, it may be necessary to cut off the old components with a hacksaw. Do not forget to use reliable goggles to protect your eyes from metal filings, and gloves to protect your hands.
The following are some recommendations for repairing the exhaust system:
- When removing exhaust system components, start at the rear of the vehicle and work your way forward.
- Use a rust remover to make loosening nuts and bolts of the exhaust system easier.
- When installing exhaust system components, use new gaskets, hangers and clamps.
- When assembling, apply anti-corrosion compound to the threads of all nuts and bolts of the exhaust system.
- Make sure there is extra clearance between the newly installed parts and all points on the bottom to avoid overheating the floor and possible damage to the mats and insulation. Pay special attention to the catalytic converter and protective screen. Also make sure that the exhaust pipe does not come into contact with suspension parts and so on.
