The Motronic control unit (computer) has a built-in self-diagnosis system that detects faults in the system sensors and records them in memory as error codes. However, the procedures given in Chapters Power supply system and Ignition system can be used to individually test the components and sensors of the Motronic system. If this does not find the cause of the fault, the car should be sent to a BMW dealer who has the necessary diagnostic equipment to read the error codes from the control unit.
You will then have the choice of either doing the repairs yourself or leaving the repairs to a BMW dealer.
