Gearbox maintenance (BMW 5 Series E12)

Every 15,000 km, check the oil level in the gearbox housing, which should reach the lower edge of the filler hole.

Every 30,000 km, change the oil in the gearbox sump immediately after the trip:

• unscrew the drain plug and, to speed up the draining of oil, the filler plug;
• on BMW "525", "528" both plugs are located on the right side of the gearbox housing, on the "520i" - on the left side.

The plugs have a tapered thread to ensure a tight seal. Tighten the plugs to the specified torque.
