Ignition system (BMW 5 Series E12)
Distributor
Every 12,000 km apply a thin layer of grease such as Bosch 1 V 4 to the fibre pad (on the surface from the axis side) movable contact of the breaker. Remove the runner and put two drops of motor oil on the felt insert of the drive shaft. If more oil is used, misfires may occur.
The working surface of the breaker contacts must be completely clean. Adjust the gap between the breaker contacts, which should be within 0.35-0.40 mm on BMW "525", "528" and equal to 0.40 mm on BMW "518", "520", "520i".
Setting the ignition timing
Every 15,000 km and after each adjustment of the gap between the breaker contacts, check the ignition timing.
Spark plugs
Replace spark plugs with new ones every 15,000 km.
Before installing new spark plugs, check the gap between the spark plug electrodes, which should be within 0.6+0.1 mm. It can only be adjusted by bending the side electrode.
The spark plugs may only be removed from the cylinder head using a special wrench.
Before installing the spark plugs, lubricate their threaded portion with a thin layer of graphite grease.
