Maintenance of the brake system (BMW 5 Series E12)
Service brake system
Check the operation and adjustment of the brakes every 15,000 km.
Parking brake system
If the rear wheels are not braked when the drive lever is raised to the 5th tooth of the sector, the parking brake must be adjusted.
Replacing brake pads
When the brake pads are worn to the minimum permissible thickness, more pedal force is required to overcome the resistance of the caliper spring. To avoid damage to the brake disc, the brake pads must be replaced immediately.
Every 15,000 km, check the overall thickness of the brake pads and the condition of the discs.
It is not allowed to swap brake pads. Replace oily pads. Slightly worn pads with peeling or cracked linings are also subject to replacement.
