Checking the exhaust system for leaks (BMW 7 Series E32)

            0

In cars with a regulated catalytic converter, leaks in the exhaust system before the lambda probe can lead to difficulties when starting the engine. The engine stalls, runs unsteadily at idle, and "chokes" when accelerating.

Test conditions: engine cold or slightly warm.

Start the engine and check the exhaust system for tightness by plugging the exhaust pipe with a rag. At the same time, the assistant should check all joints and flanges for tightness (hissing sounds and exhaust gases that can be felt by hand).

Apply a special leak detection fluid to the cylinder head/exhaust manifold and exhaust manifold/tailpipe joints and check for bubbles.

Eliminate leaks.
