Routine maintenance (BMW 3 Series E30)
Routine maintenance is performed every 20,000 km or at least once every 2 years.
Engine: Oil and full-flow oil filter change.
Valves: adjusting clearances (four-cylinder engine produced since September 1987.) not required.
Air filter: replacing the filter element.
Spark plugs: replacement.
V-belts: Check the condition and tension of all belts.
Cooling and heating system: checking the fluid level, checking the concentration of the coolant, external inspection with a check for leaks and absence of contamination.
Idle speed and CO content: checking and adjusting on a warm engine.
Throttle actuator: lubrication, wear and ease of movement check.
Exhaust system: check for damage.
Engine: external inspection of leak areas.
Clutch: check the tightness of hoses, tubes and connection points, check the brake fluid level.
Fuel line and fuel tank: check the gasket, tightness and condition of hoses and tubes.
Fuel filter: replacement (only carburetor and diesel engines).
Hinge cuffs: checking for integrity and tightness.
Gearbox and rear axle: check for leaks, check oil level.
Automatic transmission: check oil level, top up ATF if necessary.
Steering tips: checking for play and fastening, checking dust boots.
Ball joints: checking the dust boots.
Steering: check for play, check for tightness of cuffs, tighten mounting bolts to the required tightening torques.
Power steering: check fluid level, top up if necessary.
Door hinges and locks: lubrication.
Outside mirror: lubrication.
Hood hinges: lubrication with universal grease.
Bottom protection and cavity preservation: inspection.
Seat belts: checking integrity.
Brake system: check the integrity and tightness of hoses, tubes, brake cylinders and connection points.
Disc brakes: checking the thickness of the brake pads on the front and rear wheels.
Handbrake: If required, adjust the handbrake.
Tires: Checking tread depth and tire pressure; checking the integrity and wear of tires (including spare tire).
Wheels: removal, checking the condition of wheel rims (also from the inside), cleaning of wheels and installation with the prescribed tightening torque of wheel bolts.
All consumers: check functionality.
Lighting system: checking and, if necessary, adjusting headlights.
Sound signal: checking.
Windscreen wiper: checking the wear of the blades.
Windscreen washer: checking operation, adjusting nozzles, adding fluid, checking operation of headlight washers.
Air conditioning: tightening the compressor mounting bolts.
Battery: Checking Voltage and Electrolyte Level
Additionally, every 60,000 km:
Fuel filter: replacement (injection engines).
