Removal and installation the steering tip (BMW 3 Series E36)

Removal



Loosen the wheel bolts.

Raise the front of the car and remove the wheel.

Raise the front of the car and remove the wheel.


Unscrew the coupling nut "3" of the steering tip.

Loosen the steering tip joint mounting nut.

Loosen the steering tip joint mounting nut.


Press out the steering tip joint using a suitable puller.

Press the steering tip with a regular puller, for example Hazet 779.

Unscrew the steering tip while holding the steering rod with a hex key.

Note: When unscrewing, mark the number of turns for subsequent installation.


Installation



If removed, place the clamping ring of the clamping nut on the steering rod.

Unscrew the steering tip by the same number of turns.

Insert the steering tip into the steering linkage arm. Tighten the new self-locking nut to a tightening torque of 40 Nm.



Put the wheel on. Lower the car.

Tighten the wheel bolts crosswise to 110 Nm.

Tighten the steering tip clamp to 15 Nm with the vehicle on the ground.

Adjust the toe-in.

Tighten the steering tip clamping nut to a torque of 45 Nm.
